AQUAMON

Advanced QUAlity MOnitoring system of water in urbaN areas

Sustainable management of urban water bodies depends on accurate and dependable information about both water quality and quantity. In light of climate change, urban densification, and competing demands, the need for real-time data is rising to identify risks early and respond efficiently.

This is where the AQUAMON research project plays a role. Along with our partners, we are creating an intelligent, integrated monitoring system that utilises advanced sensors, AI-powered analytics, and innovative drone technology.

Our Contribution

At KWB, we apply our extensive expertise in developing software-based analytical tools. The focus is on three modules that are being further developed within AQUAMON and integrated with sensor data:

  • Chemical risk assessment: Model-based identification of critical pollutant concentrations to support water quality monitoring.

  • Microbial assessment: Real-time analysis of microbiological contamination, with particular attention to safe use.

  • Bathing water forecasting: Short-term predictive models for assessing bathing water quality, incorporating current weather and usage data.

All models in AQUAMON are closely integrated with the newly developed sensor solutions, improving accuracy, practical usability, and the level of automation.

Data Platform and Governance

The data streams produced in the project are integrated into a shared digital platform, where evaluations are collected and visualised. To ensure that data-driven tools operate reliably, data integrity and quality are crucial success factors.

In AQUAMON, we build directly on our experience from the Data Governance project. Working with the consortium, we are developing a set of requirements to ensure the technical, legal, and organisational security of data processes – a vital element for trust in digital water management.

Protecting Environment and Health

With AQUAMON, we are establishing the foundation for smart water monitoring of the future. Our aim is a strong, science-based data platform that allows authorities, operators, and policymakers to act quickly and confidently – promoting safe use, healthy ecosystems, and enhanced protection of public health.
